Keshan antique

A most beautiful example of antique carpets that have originated in the central persian region of Keshan – a city on the edge of the great salt deserts ‘Dasht-i-Kavir’. Keshan’s highly appraised weaving workshops have been famous since at least the beginning of the 17th century, and have always been well-known for producing carpets and textiles of the highest quality.

The present piece displays a so-called ‘tree of life’ or ‘paradise’ design, hereby skilfully combining colour, pattern, fabric and craftsmanship into a splendid work of art of almost breath-taking beauty and elegance. The ivory-coloured central field foams over with magnificently arranged flowers, leaves, blossoms and branches. Amidst these, an abundant array of wildlife sets the whole composition in vibrant motion: Gazelle-chasing lions wrought in gold threads, writhing serpents, whispering birds in beautiful pink and blue plumage and majestic mythical creatures in gold against a red background. Moreover, selected ornaments are very elaborately worked in relief technique, adding yet another dimension of vitality to the overall composition of abundance and joyfulness.

Finally, the exceptionally high quality of the shining cork wool and extremely fine weaving contributes to the overall impression.

Welcome the the splendor and the imaginarium of the orient!
