Ghom part-silk semiantique

Carpet details

Ghom part-silk semiantique

Ghom, about 150 km south of Tehran, on the edge of the large salt desert “Dasht-i-Kavir”, is one of the holy places of the Shiites. Although historically an important place, the establishment of the art of carpet weaving in Ghom is still relatively young, since carpets have been produced here since the beginning of the 20th century only. Today, however, the city is one of the most important centers for carpets in Iran and is especially famous for the artful processing of high-quality silk.
The present piece dates from the 1960s and is showing a medium knotting density with silk content. The water-blue central field is interspersed with striking palmettes, cloud bands, forked tendrils and flowering branches, amongst which are large mythical creatures, panthers and antelopes, some of which are worked in luminous silk. A beautiful piece with finely crafted highlights!
