Agra antique palace carpet

This jewel from the masterworkshops of Agra is an especially fine and rare example of the highly sophisticated art of carpet weaving in northern India at the turn of the 20th century.

Being not only famous for its splendid Mughal architecture such as the world-famous Taj Mahal, Agra was also widely known for ist superb royal carpet manufacturies at least since the 17th century. The present piece proves just how justified this high reputation is. It is evident at first glance that every component of the overall composition – material, weave, color and design – was selected and assembled in order to create a high-quality custom-made masterpiece. Even after a century, the fine and silky pile is still high and soft, the colors still rich and vibrant. The midnight-blue interior field is filled with large, splendidly coloured flowers and palmettes, and makes a beautiful contrast against several outer bordures dominated by pink and gold tones.

A true masterpiece of excellent quality and outstanding condition which makes every carpet lover’s heart skip a beat.
